RAY BARRETTO (1929 - 2006)

We were very sad to hear that one of latin musics' greatest musicians and band leaders, RAY BARRETTO had passed away yesterday. He had been producing albums for more than forty years, twenty-two of them with the incomparable FANIA ALL-STARS, his conga playing gracing the likes of jazz musicians such as Gene Ammons, Lou Donaldson, Sonny Stitt, and guitarists Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell. Born in Brooklyn in 1929, of Puerto Rican ancestry, Ray was virtually responsible for inventing Latin Boogaloo, Salsa, Latin Funk & Jazz... We'll be dropping a whole bunch of his tunes on Sunday night in tribute - "Soul Drummers", "Acid", "Hard Hands", "Teacher of Love" and his incredible version of Stevie Wonders' "Pastime Paradise".

SUNDAY JOINT ANCIENT HISTORY

The original SUNDAY JOINT was conceived and brought into being by Roger C and Lesley Green (manageress of the Vortex Jazz Bar) after a series of highly successful semi-legal, warehouse parties in the Stoke Newington area of North-East London... The idea was that it be an event where people could wind down & relax after a hard weekend of partying, however when the beer started to flow anything could happen, and it was not unknown for spontaneous outbreaks of dancing on the bar to "jump-up" hip-hop, to erupt.

"Phat Beats, Hip-Hop, Funky Soundtracks, Drum'n'Bass and Loungecore... all sewn up with a tenous jazz thread" was the by-line - because at that time the Vortex was one of the longest running and respected jazz clubs in London, visited by many famous international jazz musicians. Many of the local DJ's who made guest appearances on the turntables with Roger C were drawn from Stokies huge pool of talent - Nigel Clark from chart-toppers Dodgy, Tjinder Singh from indie stalwarts Cornershop, MIchael Dog from the infamous Club Dog and Planet Dog Records, all the serious vinyl-heads from Totem Records across the street. Alt-cabaret songstresses Pearl Harbour and Dee Day Landings made a few appearances, the Bikini Beach Band were frequently involved - the only thing predictable about the Sunday Joint was it's un-predictability.

Resident DJ Roger C quit the UK in November 1998 for Los Angeles and eventually Sydney, Australia but The Sunday Joint continued on at The Vortex until May / June of the following year... there was a tie-in with Sonnie Mann's Chapel of Karaoke every couple of weeks... Tom Middleton made an appearance. Eventually though the Joint came to an end in the early summer of 1999.

However, The Sunday Joint was definitely not going to die... in December of 1999, Roger C resurrected the concept in Sydney, in the upstairs lounge of the Well Connected internet cafe in Glebe, a neighborhood very similar to Stoke Newington in many ways, but with more sun and less shootings. It ran there for five months, throughout the long hot Australian summer, with Roger C being joined every week by local guest djs, and finished at the end of April 2000 with the expiration of his Australian visitors visa.

In addition to their regular Sunday night event - THE SUNDAY JOINT - from the beginning of next month, Roger © and Lloyd will be hosting a new monthly event called BIG WEDNESDAY at SIFO in the Raval district of Barcelona. However as THE SUNDAY JOINT is very much an early evening, post-weekend, recovery event - BIG WEDNESDAY will be aimed fully at the dancefloor with both barrels blazing...

BIG WEDNESDAY is all about big tunes from every genre of roots music - bound together with the cohesive glue of funk. Rhythm & Blues, Soul Stompers, Jazz, Latin Boogaloo, Original Disco, Afrobeat, Reggae, Dancehall & Old-School Hip-Hop. Plus of course Funk from every continent, from every decade and every genre - blended to pefection and splashed liberally across the dancefloor. The classics and the the rare, music from fifty years ago and tunes from last week - selected and mixed as if they were born to be together.

BIG WEDNESDAY is for dancers, in a comfortable bar, with a fat sound system and plenty of room to move. If you haven't been reduced to a liquid pool of sweating, heaving human protoplasm by the end of the night, then Roger and Lloyd will gladly let you kick their asses.

WILSON PICKETT PASSES ON

Soul legend Wilson Pickett has died aged 64 after suffering a heart attack in Virginia. His management company said that he had been in poor health for the past year, and last performed in 2004. Born in Alabama, Pickett shot to fame in the 1960s, with hits including "In The Midnight Hour" (which Pickett co-wrote) and "Mustang Sally".

SUNDAY JOINT XMAS PARTY

Phew - well finally, despite all the elements conspiring against us, THE SUNDAY JOINT managed to pull off it's first Xmas party. It was a near thing. First of all we rolled up at Senses, only to discover that there had been a bizarre toilet backing up accident during the night and all the toilets were ankle deep in shit and slurry. Big respect to Elm who soldiered on with mop & bucket, in order to get it all together, whilst we got on with the less messy jobs, like configuring the new video projector.

So we managed to turn in a good five hour set of soul, funk, reggae etc - complemented by screenings of Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai" and erm... the "Thunderbirds Christmas Special"... well we like a bit of diversity.

A packed house consumed all the Vodka Jellys - but it could have turned very ugly, when Mandy & Michelle's extended family won loads of the raffle prizes, whilst Mandy was picking the numbers... Many eyebrows were raised, but honestly it was just co-incidence.

Also maximum respect to all of our friends & visitors, who suffered the inconvenience of going out into the cold & using the bathrooms in the bar across the street - as ours were strictly 'off limits' for the night. I don't think a single person complained, which was much appreciated. Big ups to the remaining hardcore party people, who then joined us at Sifo, where Lloyd & myself teamed up with DJ Mervnic to keep the dancefloor jumping until 3.00am.
Finally a farewell to Jenn and Gemma, leaving BCN for San Fransisco & London respectively - thanks for your support and remember 'you can check out, but you can never leave'.

This weekend promises to be a monster:

THE SUNDAY JOINT
First of all on Sunday night we have THE SUNDAY JOINT at Senses, c/Carme 74, El Raval - where Roger C and Lloyd will be mixing up the funk, soul, jazz breaks, afrobeat, latin boogaloo, hip-hop & crazy Christmas tunes (you wait!) from 19:00 until midnight. At 21:30 it's free Vodka Jelly Time - so get there in time, for this regular weekly treat. We have some very special movies & projections lined up for your amusement as well as some secrets.... all will be revealed.

This will be our final SUNDAY JOINT of the year - as the next two Sundays fall on Xmas day & New Years Day, the bar will be closed.
Our first event of next year, will be on Sunday, 8th January 2006 - so ink that into your new diary.

Roger C has put together a mixed CDR especially for THE SUNDAY JOINT - 16 tracks / 50 minutes of deep funk, raw soul, jazz breaks, hip-hop & latin - some classic & some brand new. It's available for sale at the DJ desk for a paltry €5.00.

Leaving Senses when it closes at midnight - Lloyd & Roger C, will be dashing across Raval to join DJ Mervnic at the new club night - A FAMILY BUSINESS, where they'll all be dropping dancefloor bombs until 2.30am - on a very loud soundsystem. So they'd be more than happy for you to join them at Sifo, c/Espalter 4, El Raval - off of Sant Pau, very near the legendary Absinthe bar - Marsella. Entry is free, watch out for the wicked posters around Raval - a little bit of the old East-End, come to Barcelona... cor blimey!

We played there a couple of weeks ago until nearly 3.00am and it was great, good atmosphere, up-for-it crowd - what better way to set yourself up for Xmas week?

THE UNDERSEA PARTY
Last weekend one of our SUNDAY JOINT regulars (we’ll call her SK as she is very shy) & her housemates hosted an awesome costume party in the centre of BCN. It had a distinctly aquatic theme, with people dressed as fish, sharks, jellyfish, sailors, pirates, bathing beauties, lobsters, shrimps & god knows what else. THE SUNDAY JOINT’s Roger C manned the decks & provided a solid eight hours of funk, soul, reggae, latin, hip-hop, afrobeat & mad party tunes, too everybody’s amazement we managed to get all the way through ‘til 8:00am without a visit from the police. More parties like that are definitely needed.

LA FIESTA BAJO DEL MAR

El fin de semana pasado, una de nuestras asiduas a nuestras noches SUNDAY JOINT (la llamaremos SK porque es muy vergonzosa) y sus compañeros de piso ofrecieron una increíble fiesta de disfraces en el centro de Barcelona. El tema era acuático y la gente se disfrazó de peces, tiburones, medusas, piratas, bellezas en bañadores, gambas, langostas y dios sabe que más. Roger C, dj de THE SUNDAY JOINT, fue el encargado de poner banda sonora a la velada y pinchó, durante 8 sólidas horas, una mezcla de soul, reggae, latin, hop-hop y afrobeat. Increíblemente logramos fiestear hasta las 8 de la mañana sin que nos molestase la poli. Está claro que necesitamos más fiestas como estas.

Well I hope you'll be happy to hear that Sunday Joint #3 passed off very well last night, despite the torrential rain that was lashing Barcelona all evening - we still had a good crowd and nice atmosphere. Even our grumpy neighbour from next door, didn't come in to complain about the volume, which was an added bonus. The music rolled along nicely and we supplemented it with Jackie Chan's "Drunken Master" kung fu classic on DVD, which everybody seemed to enjoy. Hope to see you there next week.

THE OPENING JOINT
First of all, we would like to say thanks to everybody who came along on Sunday night for the opening of THE SUNDAY JOINT at Senses in Raval, and we hope that you all has as good a time as we did. A good crowd and really nice atmosphere, we really couldn't have asked for anything more. Those of you that didn't make it - you missed six solid hours of deep funk, raw soul, roots reggae, latin, jazz and hip-hop, complimented with some nice purpose-made animations and cult-tv shows, projected across the walls - 'Monkey' was a big hit... Then there were Elm's free 'tequila sunrise' chupitos, which really kicked ass. So we hope to see you all next week.

THE OPENING JOINT
Para empezar, queremos dar las gracias a toda aquella gente que vino para la noche inaugural de THE SUNDAY JOINT en el bar Senses en El Raval , y esperamos que os lo pasasteis tan bien como nosotros. Realmente no podíamos haber pedido más para nuestra primera noche: gente maja y buen ambiente.

Para aquellos que no pudisteis venir: os perdisteis seis sólidas horas de deep funk, raw soul, roots reggae, latin, jazz y hip-hop, complementadas por unas bonitas animaciones hechas especialmente para la ocasión y series de televisión de culto que se proyectaron en las paredes. “Monkey” fue un gran éxito.

Y para terminar, no olvidamos los chupitos “Tequila Sunrise” (gratis!) de Elm que estaban cojonudos.

Esperamos veros a todos/ todas la semana que viene!!

What Is The Sunday Joint?
The Sunday Joint is a new club commencing in Barcelona at the end of October. Every Sunday evening DJ / Promoters, Roger C and Lloyd Thomas will be presenting a finely prepared menu of funky beats and visuals, in elegant and comfortable surroundings. The perfect crossover from Saturday night to Monday morning.

Where Is The Sunday Joint?
At a brand new bar in El Raval, Senses – intimate and simple, with low-level sofas and tables, cosy corners and low lights. Complete with a fully stocked bar and excellent high-quality sound system.

What Music Plays At The Sunday Joint?
A thick and tasty stew of Funk, Soul, Jazz Breaks, Roots Reggae flavoured with some Latin Boogaloo and spiced with a little Afrobeat and Old-School Hip-Hop. A delicate blend of tunes both classic, rare and contemporary… James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Stax, Betty Davis, Sly Stone, The Meters & Soul Jazz… Willie Bobo, Ray Barretto, Fania & Vampisoul… through to the 21st Century sounds of Quantic Soul Orchestra, Jamie Lidell, Plantlife, Sharon Jones, Ninja Tunes and Quannum. A simmering cauldron of beats & breaks, where anything goes as long as the main ingredient is SOUL.

Who DJ’s At The Sunday Joint?
• Lloyd Thomas – if all the beats in this man’s laptop were laid end-to-end, they would reach the moon. Lloyd has played extensively in the UK and also at a great many barrio bars in his occasional home of Medellin, Columbia.
• Roger C – a DJ for twenty years, there are not many places where Roger has not spun his extensive collection of vinyl & cds. He started the original Sunday Joint in 1997 where it ran for a year at the Vortex Jazz Bar in North London, providing a platform for local DJ’s and musicians to perform. After re-locating to Australia in 1999, Roger started the second Sunday Joint in the Glebe, Sydney which ran throughout the long hot summer of 1999 – 2000. This led to a two year DJ residency on Eastside Radio in Sydney – producing his own soul & funk show “Fight The Power”.

• Lloyd Thomas – si todos los beats que se encuentran en el portátil de este hombre se pusiesen uno tras otro, llegarían a la Luna. Lloyd ha pinchado exhaustivamente por todo el Reino Unido, así como en una gran cantidad de bares en su ocasional ciudad de acogida Medellín, Colombia.
• Roger C – DJ desde hace 20 años, existen pocos los sitios en los que Roger no ha pinchado su extensa colección de vinilos y cds. El original Sunday Joint nació en 1997, en el Vortex Jazz Bar del Norte de Londres, sirviendo de plataforma para DJs y músicos locales. Tras mudarse a Australia en 1999, Roger comenzó el segundo Sunday Joint en Glebe, Sydney. En el 2000, comenzó dos años de residencia en el Eastside Radio en Sydney, donde produjo su propio show de Soul & Funk llamado “Fight the Power”.
